CTFC Presentation Evening 2008

The book on Cheadle Town's 2007-2008 season was finally closed on Saturday when the presentation evening was held at the clubhouse.

After the chairman very kindly asked me to do the "thank you" presentations to Cat (who has collected the money on the gate all season), the groundsman, Donna (who has looked after the snack bar), Terry Musgrave and the barlady, it was time for Steve and Trevor to make the main presentations.

Ben Roberts picked up the Player's Player of the Season Award, with Adam Roberts collecting the Manager's Player of the Season, adding to the equivalent award that this blog has already given him. It's been quite a season for the Roberts brothers.

Below is a video of the two main presentations. Apologies for my raucous laughter but if you were a supporter of the club you'd appreciate how funny the "Johnny Hussain didn't get any votes" bit was!

2007-2008 Season Review: Player-by-Player

GOALKEEPERS
Peter 'Misery Guts' Mellor
Wore the gloves the most times for Cheadle but has sadly disappeared once more into the ether. Don't bet against a return for next season!
Steven Moores
Was Mellor's replacement in the second-half of the season and was doing well...until that crazy, puzzling game at Blackpool Mechanics where he undeservedly had to pick the ball out of the net five times.
Daniel Atkinson
Featured mainly at the start of the season during our cup run and put in some blinding performances, notably at Atherton Collieries in the FA Cup. Left Cheadle to continue his basketball coaching.
Anthony 'Boom' O'Keefe
Strewth, he's a big lad. 'Boom' became our custodian-of-choice towards the latter end of the season. Can kick a ball from Cheadle to China and has agility and handling that belie his stature.

DEFENDERS
Ben Roberts
Our tigerish left-back has had another great season and has chipped in with a few goals to boot, most notably his excellent free-kick at home to Darwen.
Scott Clarke
Was tentatively brought into the squad for the pre-season friendlies and has ended up becoming a regular at right-back: a testament to the progress he's made this term.
James Heath
Has had a season riddled by injury and general misfortune but hasn't stopped him putting in his usual steely contribution. Will be sadly missed as he has decided to join our armed forces. Best of luck, Heathy!
Barry 'Asda Price' Cotterill
Just to show you how wide the spread of goalscorers has been this season, even Barry has managed to net (at home to K&H). Another solid season.
Adam Roberts
Mr Dependable at the back, very rarely puts a foot wrong and just gets on with the job with the minimum of fuss. Deserved winner of our cheadletownfc.com Player Of The Season Award.
Neil Logan
Was on the substitutes bench a few times at the start of the season but has been a regular of late. A good communicator on the pitch and a valued member of the back line. Has come on leaps and bounds.
Matty 'The Governor' Smith
Has been mainly involved with managing our reserve side but his handful of first-team appearances didn't go unnoticed. Was our undoubted man-of-the-match in the 3-3 draw at home to eventual promotees Kirkham and Wesham. Always seems to have loads of time on the ball - always a sign of a good player. If only he was ten years younger....
Brad Fellows
Made his debut at home to Chadderton and has put in dependable, promising performances in midfield.

MIDFIELDERS
Robert Brocklehurst
Is now plying his trade for Runcorn Linnets. Appeared in almost every match up until his departure. Obviously likes playing at Eccleshall as two of his goals came at Pershall Park!
Arron 'Daddy Cool' Riley
Another ever-present face in the side. Gets our goal of the season award for the screamer he scored in the 2-0 home victory over Ashton Town. Arron is now part of the Cheadle Town furniture!
Andy MacDonald
Another player with that touch of class about him. Made important contributions to the early-season cup exploits and scored a belter to knock St Helens Town out of the FA Vase. We're not sure whether he'll play for us next season as he has returned to Spain.
Johnny 'Every Ref Knows His Name' Hussain
Cheadle Town's very own Paul Gascoigne in personality if not neccessarily in talent. Has mucked in with some key goals, most notably the last-kick winner that stole three points at Daisy Hill.
Andy Lindon
Has been in-and-out of the team all season and will surely be disappointed with just the three goals to his name.

STRIKERS
Dean 'Deano' Martin
I said it last season and I'll say it again. If he played every match then he'd bag 30+ goals for Cheadle every season, no problem. Our top scorer, again. Has not played a match for Cheadle since the 0-4 Vodkat League Cup defeat at home to Maine Road.
Carl 'Call The Cops' Buchanan
Took him a while to "get going" and make his regular place in the first-team line ups but once he did, became a key player with his sorties down the left-wing. His best form came after making a great recovery from a season-threatening knee injury sustained at home to Blackpool Mechanics. Norton United aren't one of his favourite teams.
Mike 'Halloween' Myers
The fact that he really should have more goals to his name doesn't tell the full story of somebody who more than makes up for it in work rate alone.
Scott 'The Wasp' Flanagan
...or "supersub" as we should be calling him as he has come off the bench three times this season to bag a goal and collected a well-deserved hat-trick away to Castleton Gabriels. Is slowly becoming our cult hero.
Brad Brokenbrow
Has about as many substitutes appearances as 'The Wasp' but sadly not the amount of goals. Is young and enthusiastic. He'll score next season, just you see!

Honourable mentions also to...
Hillsy - for his stint inbetween the sticks against Holker Old Boys
James McDonagh - played in three matches at the start of the season before leaving the club
Rory O'Donohue - came in from the reserves to play in the Cheshire Senior Cup tie against Congleton Town
Dave Bennett - promising, quick-as-a-whippet winger drafted in from the reserves for the Cheshire Senior Cup match
Phil Corley - another youngster from the reserve side that put in a couple of appearances
Tom Seaton - new signing who only made a few appearances but bagged a goal against Eccleshall at Park Road
Dave Carpenter - was ever-present right up until the FA Cup tie at Atherton Collieries before moving on.
Adie James - handful of appearances from the subs bench, with one goal at home to Castleton to his name
(?) Thirkle - snow-haired attacker who appeared in the pre-season friendlies but then only made one subs bench appearance away at Leek CSOB. Playing for the reserves, we believe.
Sam Hall - another youngster that started to appear at the end of the season. Had a great game away to Bootle which was capped with his first - and excellent - goal in a Cheadle shirt.
Gaz Gittens - put in two subs appearances in the last two matches after being drafted in from the reserves. From what we've seen of him, looks an alright player and could featutre a bit more next season.

2007-2008 Season Review: Reflection from The Pole

Rollercoaster engineers who are conducting a field study into the emotions brought about by their handywork would do no worse than to spend a season following Cheadle Town FC.

To paraphrase David Brent from The Office, Cheadle's seasons seem to be a series of peaks and troughs; we don't know when we're in a trough until we're climbing out, or on a peak until we're coming down...we never know what's around the corner. But it's all good. If you want the rainbow you've got to put up with the rain. You know which philosopher said that? Dolly Parton. And some say she's just a big pair of tits.

I digress. In my personal review of last season I mentioned "a good cup run" as part of my wishlist for this season. Although it - nor the media hype - may not have matched that of Kirkham and Wesham, our cup exploits this season fed us more than our diet would usually allow. It was the "cup month" of September 2007 that would provide me with my personal high- and low-points of the season.

There were plenty of highs this season, but none of them could really surpass the 5-2 away win at Div 1's Atherton Collieries in the 1st Qualifying Round. Everything went right for us that day in a match that just goes to show what we can do when the mood (and luck) suits us!

Lows? Plenty of those and all, but the stand-out is the 1-2 defeat at Dinnington Town in the following Qualifying Round. This was the worst, most uncomfortable away-day I've ever had following Cheadle Town and living proof that with big crowds comes the increased probability of a small minority of complete and utter f*cking dickheads. An FA Cup day ruined.

Cups apart, the league business was its usual melange of mirth and merriment. We got off to a fair-if-not-illustrious start and actually didn't lose a home league match until the end of October. In fact, our record at home in the league wasn't that bad this term; thank God, as our away form has let us down horrendously where league matches have been concerned. League performance of the season for me was the 2-0 home victory against Ashton Town in January where we were down to our absolute bare bones squadwise.

Then something strange happened as March loomed into view. Our 2-0 home victory over Daisy Hill heralded utter chaos: unmitigated pannings away at Blackpool Mechs, Oldham Town, Kirkham & Wesham, Ashton Athletic and Bootle...key away victories at Ashton Town and Castleton Gabriels...the goal-riddled mayhem of the home matches versus Darwen and Eccleshall...Norton United away....

With this being my second full-season following Cheadle there was always the danger of the novelty value wearing off or not having learnt anything new. Far from it. The novelty is still as strong as ever - how else would you explain the excitement that surrounds an away trip to Leek CSOB - and some small, but significant lessons have been learnt: I'll miss going to New Mills; if you want a sensible chat about football with opposing fans you talk to the elders as it's a waste of time talking to anybody under 35; the M6 is really crap; Polardin has more optimistic faith than me; always stand next to the Cheadle bench at away matches and not amongst the locals; there's no accounting for common sense....

They say "if you don't ask, you don't get", so I'm going to be bold and push forward another personal wishlist for next season:
* to not get soaked at Chadderton
* to have a normal, uneventful day away to Norton United
* to see the return of white-black-black as the club's colours
* to finally get to an Ashton Town away match
* a top-ten finish and finally...
* a win away at Holker Old Boys as it's a long 200-mile round-trip when you come away from there with a defeat!

So bring it on, 2008-2009, I'll be ready and waiting as ever....

2007-2008 Season Review: In Numbers

So here we go - time to round things up in my series of end-of-season reviews. We'll kick things off with the number-crunching (as that's the easiest thing to do first!). All figures are for all competitions except where it says "league". There's some interesting stuff...

Final League Position and Points
14th with 33 points from 34 matches played (includes the 3 points we had deducted) - just less than an average of one point per game.
Home League Record
7 wins, 4 draws, 6 losses
Away League Record
3 wins, 2 draws, 12 losses
Goals Scored
64 in total: 43 at home, 21 away
Goals Conceded
98 in total: 44 at home, 54 away (43 - almost half - of the 98 goals occurring in the last two months of the season!!)
Goals Scored Half by Half
25 in the first half, 39 in the second
Top Scorer
Dean Martin with 14 goals
Biggest Win
5-2 v Atherton Collieries (away), FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round
Heaviest Defeat
0-8 v Kirkham and Wesham (away), NWCFL Div 2
Biggest Home Attendance
138 v Runcorn Linnets (home), Vodkat League Cup 3rd Round
Smallest Home Attendance
23 v Holker Old Boys, NWCFL Div 2
Most Consecutive Wins
Never any more than two!
Most Consecutive Games Unbeaten
4 - achieved on two occasions
Most Consecutive Games Without A Win
4 - again, achieved on two occasions
League 'Doubles'
2 - Daisy Hill and Ashton Town (a team we couldn't beat last season!)
Percentage of League Points Gained by Venue
69% at home, 31% away - roughly the same as last season, which is a surprise as I thought our away percentage would be a hell of a lot worse.
League Points Gained as a Percentage of Total Possible Points
35% - exactly the same as it was last season!
Number of Points We Would Have Ended Up With If We'd Have Won The Games We Should Have, Drawn The Games We Ended Up Losing and Not Won The Games We Didn't Deserve To Win
47 - we'd be 9th!!!
