Wednesday's Opponents: Ashton Town

Dear Lord, let there be a game of football this Wednesday evening. Yours, cheadletownfc.com

Should the reputedly beardy one grant our wish then this will be a game as equally as important (as far as league placings are concerned) as the Chadderton one that bit the dust on Saturday.

Prior to losing 0-2 at AFC Blackpool on Saturday, Ashton Town had racked up four league wins on the trot giving them the base on which they sit coming into this match: with 15 points from 16 matches i.e like Chadderton, with the ability to overtake us should they walk away from SK8 2AN with all three points.

As you can see below, our record against Ashton Town at Park Road is a tad erratic. We were 2nd in the table last season when they played out of their skin - having been battered by all and sundry up to that point - and deservedly won. The season before that - when both teams were sick of the sight of each other - we had comfortably beaten them 3-0 in the FA Cup (check out the goals in the 'Video' section of this website) only to lose 2-3 a couple of weeks later in the FA Vase!

So, it's anybody's match. Fingers crossed for a match in the first place...and a win.

Come on Cheadle!

2006-2007: drew 3-3, lost 0-2 (FirstDiv Trophy)
2005-2006: drew 0-0
2004-2005: won 2-1

Should be interesting.

It's only natural that I'd go for an Ashton Town victory but consider the situation (à là Glenn Hoddle!!!)

Woodley Sports friendly aside Cheadle haven't played since, I think, the 12th of December.

Ashton's result against AFC Blackpool came as no big surprise. I thought it might be a bit anti climactic after their exploits against Liverpool in midweek. I reckon the Manager will have learnt from this though and will have his side "up" for the game.

I think much will depend on how Cheadle react to their enforced lay-off. Will they be straining at the leash? Or will they be lethargic? They'll certainly be short of match practice which should go in Ashton's favour.

Anyway, we need the three points more than you do!!

Yes, what I conveniently forgot to mention is that Ashton Town have the edge over us in terms of recent match-fitness; you have been lucky to play two matches over the past seven days!! :-)

Nonetheless - as you point out - it should be interesting. I'm expecting a fairly open match. Here's hoping that the frost sods off.

No shame losing at AFC Blackpool particularly the way they're going at the moment. We go there this Saturday. They could do the double over us following their (rather ill-tempered) 3-0 win at Park Road.

Oh Dear!!

It seems your prayers have fallen on deaf ears.

Believe me, the air was blue when I found out it was off!

Time to re-do the Fixtures and Results page. Again!
