Results Round-Up: Saturday 6th February 2010

Following the defeat at AFC Blackpool, our very own Cheadle Town have slipped another place to 12th with 17 points from 15 games. The win for the seasiders did wonders for them; they are now in 5th spot!

Shock result of the day came at Valerie Park where AFC Liverpool fell to a 0-1 home defeat at the hands of Rochdale Town. Stone Dominoes are still four points clear at the top but needed an 89th-minute goal to snatch a 2-2 draw at Oldham Borough. Leek CSOB are back in 2nd spot after their 3-2 win at Daisy Hill and Barnoldswick Town's 1-1 home draw with Irlam; those teams now in 3rd and 4th spot respectively.

Elsewhere, the result that did Cheadle the biggest favour was Chadderton's 1-1 home draw thus preventing them or their opponents overtaking us; Ashton Town continued to be upwardly mobile by claiming an impressive 4-2 win at Wigan Robin Park and Eccleshall and Holker Old Boys played out a 2-2 draw.

Finally, in the FA Vase the last remaining NWCFL representation bowed out as New Mills were defeated 0-2 at home to Norton & Stockton Ancients.

AFC Blackpool 4-0 Cheadle Town

Cheadle's return to action was greeted by this heavy defeat at the hands of a resurgent AFC Blackpool.

We were seriously undone in a nine-minute period in the second-half where we conceded three identikit goals: through balls to their forward line that caught our back-four square leaving the striker with a one-on-one with O'Keefe. The only minor exception was their third goal on 67 minutes: Keefo seemed to be coming out for it but managed to be beaten by an outstretched limb that nutmegged the ball under his legs.

AFCB's three-goal salvo built upon a single goal lead that was gained virtually on the stroke of half-time. A cross from the right eventually found their unmarked no.7 at the far post who had time to drill home.

Up until that point Cheadle - despite failing to create any clear-cut chances - were holding their own and restricting AFCB to long-range or weak shots straight at Keefo's midriff. The best half-chance we had came just before Blackpool's goal where Arron Riley snatched at a snap-shot and screwed the ball wide.

We could have actually made it 1-1 on the 48th minute; James McDonagh having a header cleared from the line following a corner. Twenty minutes later and we'd be four goals worse off. Such is football.

Fair play to AFC Blackpool who were good value for their win today. We didn't quite do enough to get anything out of it and were missing that extra yard of pace today - something which I'll put down to our lack of competitive action.

Yes, a heavy defeat but good to be back in the matchday routine. Hopefully the ring-rustiness will be out of the system by next week when we travel to Irlam for the quarter-final of the First Division Trophy!

Saturday's Opponents: AFC Blackpool

You know, I was that far away (making not-very-big-space jesture with my fingers) from not bothering with this preview. F**king weather.

To paraphrase something that somebody once said, "it's the hope I can't deal with". Going without my Cheadle fix over the summer is an established routine and causes only minor personal grief; advancing from fixture to fixture with that air of hope only to have it snatched away by Winter's sometimes cruel hands is different and is starting to do my head right in.

Redemption - as it so often did when I was a child - may come in the shape of Blackpool.

On Saturday 16th January in amongst the now-tedious row of "P-P" marks on the results list stood one solitary glimmer of hope: AFC Blackpool managed to get a game on. That was a 1-0 home win over Irlam, a win that has come in the middle of an impressive run of form for them: 4 wins in their last 6 matches and in a now-healthy 8th spot with 22 points from 18 games.

The fact that AFC Blackpool managed to get that Irlam match on owes much to the new drainage system that the club installed last season; of course it can't do much about freezing temperatures but AFCB's reputation for getting games on when others can't gives us that little bit of hope, doesn't it?

The reverse fixture at Park Road back at the start of December resulted in an allegedly (I wasn't there) very ill-tempered affair on and off the pitch and a 0-3 defeat for us lot. We'll want to avenge that, but the ride's gonna be as tough as the Pleasure Beach's Grand National rollercoaster.

Come on Cheadle!

Cheadle Town v Ashton Town: Postponed

Frozen pitch, I'm presuming.

AFC Blackpool seem to have been able to get games on-the-go of late so Saturday's match there looks a good prospect.

The fixture backlog isn't as bad as what you may think as some of the fixtures in the "to be re-arranged" category now have a slot. Check the Fixtures and Results section for the updated schedule.

Wednesday's Opponents: Ashton Town

Dear Lord, let there be a game of football this Wednesday evening. Yours, cheadletownfc.com

Should the reputedly beardy one grant our wish then this will be a game as equally as important (as far as league placings are concerned) as the Chadderton one that bit the dust on Saturday.

Prior to losing 0-2 at AFC Blackpool on Saturday, Ashton Town had racked up four league wins on the trot giving them the base on which they sit coming into this match: with 15 points from 16 matches i.e like Chadderton, with the ability to overtake us should they walk away from SK8 2AN with all three points.

As you can see below, our record against Ashton Town at Park Road is a tad erratic. We were 2nd in the table last season when they played out of their skin - having been battered by all and sundry up to that point - and deservedly won. The season before that - when both teams were sick of the sight of each other - we had comfortably beaten them 3-0 in the FA Cup (check out the goals in the 'Video' section of this website) only to lose 2-3 a couple of weeks later in the FA Vase!

So, it's anybody's match. Fingers crossed for a match in the first place...and a win.

Come on Cheadle!

Results Round-Up: Saturday 30th January 2010

Only three matches ended up surviving the overnight frost this weekend.

In the pick of the fixtures, AFC Liverpool must feel as though they have kept their promotion hopes well and truly alive after an impressive 1-0 away win at table-toppers Stone Dominoes. The Staffordshire side are still 6 points clear at the top but the Merseysiders have now shifted up to 5th spot with plenty of games-in-hand with which to make an impact.

Just ahead of them in 4th spot are Irlam. They prevented Wigan Robin Park making up any ground on them by defeating them 2-0. In the other remaining match, AFC Blackpool's good league run continued - and Ashton Town's was halted - by a 2-0 win. The seasiders are now in 8th spot but have played more matches than anybody else. Mind you, they do say it's good to have the points in the bag.

Our very own Cheadle Town haven't been affected by today's matches and are still in 11th spot with those 17 points from 14 matches.

Cheadle Town v Chadderton: Postponed

Frozen pitch. Aaaargh! Perhaps we'll get a game on Wednesday night.....

Saturday's Opponents: Chadderton

And so, after six weeks of void, the boys in white-and-black are finally involved in a league encounter as Chadderton are the visitors to Park Road.

We face a Chadderton team currently in 13th spot with 15 points, meaning a win for them would see them overtake us in the table. They have faired slightly better on-the-road and all; 9 of those 15 points have been gained on their travels, the most recent bounty being hauled at Eccleshall last week with a handy 3-2 win.

Despite this, Chadderton are still the least prolific in the league when it comes to hitting the back of the net; just 15 goals for them in league matches this season.

Past fortune favours us; as you can see Chadderton have failed to walk away from the SK8 School of Footballing Excellence with a win for the past three seasons. Let's hope that their slight goal-shyness continues and we get "Season 2009-2010: Phase 2" off to a cracking start.

We could really do with winning this. Come on Cheadle!

Last five at Park Road:

Damned Lies and Statistics?

As January is about to (thankfully) sod off and become February, it's time to start focusing on the top-half finish that's needed for qualification into next season's FA Cup competition. As I did last season, I'll use some circuitous mathematics pointed out to me by a friend of mine. So, if you find all of this a bit much, blame a chap called Geoff Gibson and/or go and do something less boring instead.

Below are two tables created using the wizardry available at one's disposal when using Microsoft Excel. Both hopefully lend some insight into the "real" position of the teams in Division One, levelling out the uneven number of games played across the 16 teams.

This first one uses the average number of points gained per match and projects that to a total for the end of the season based on number of matches remaining. We have 17 points from 14 matches, an average of 1.21 points per match; times that by 18 (games left to play) and you get our projected finishing total of 39 points. Got that? Go to the top of the class.

As you can see, our top-half finish is somewhat in jeopardy at the moment but all it would take is a slight improvement in our average points-per-match rate, which admittedly wasn't helped by our recent 3 point penalty. Turning some draws into wins would go a long way and all.

The other thing to look at is possible number of points. This is a bit more agricultural as it doesn't take into account the fact that teams actually take points from each other but it still gives a rough-as-bear's-arse pointer.

What's noticeable from both tables is that one team stands out at this moment in time: Stone Dominoes; their points-per-match ratio is head-and-shoulders above anybody else's. One thing the 'Possible Points' table does show is that AFC Liverpool have the potential to still make up a lot of ground.

There's a long way to go yet but I hope that has been of some use. I'll publish them again nearer Easter as we start to get to the pointy end of the season.

Comments? Thoughts? Musings? Or do you not care? :-)

Results Round-Up: Saturday 23rd January 2010

Our very own Cheadle Town have slipped to 11th place - with 17 points from 14 games - following this weekend's action. What's of concern is that a majority of the teams below us have games-in-hand on us. We need to start stringing some wins together or else our large number of drawn games is going to start to manifest in the position in the table.

League results in a bit. New Mills are the only NWCFL representatives left in the FA Vase after they defeated Witney United 2-1 and Bootle were dumped out at Norton & Stockton Ancients by four goals to two (Sky Sports had this down as a 0-4 defeat!).

It was also the 3rd Round of the Vodkat League Cup. Wigan Robin Park claimed the weekend's major scalp by beating Premier Division Runcorn Linnets 3-2 (after extra time). AFC Liverpool also had Premier League opposition; they went to Glossop North End and came back with a replay after a 0-0 draw. Elsewhere there were wins for Winsford United, Abbey Hey, St Helens Town and Newcastle Town.

The draw for the 4th Round is as follows:
Abbey Hey v Daisy Hill or New Mills
Irlam or Bootle v Newcastle Town
St Helens Town v Wigan Robin Park
Winsford United v AFC Liverpool or Glossop North End

Right, Division One. The top-of-the-table clash between Barnoldswick Town and Stone Dominoes ended in a 0-0 draw, a point that hauled the Lancashire men into 2nd place (six points behind Stone) after Leek CSOB fell to a 0-2 defeat at Atherton Collieries.

AFC Blackpool's rise up the table - overtaking us - continued with a 3-0 away win at Holker Old Boys. Elsewhere, Ashton Town kept up their recent good form in the league - and kept Rochdale Town well and truly rooted to the bottom - with a 3-0 win; Daisy Hill claimed a 2-1 home win over Oldham Borough and Chadderton went to Eccleshall and won 3-2.
