Wednesday's Opponents: AFC Liverpool

'March Madness: Chapter 3 in a series of 9' takes us to Prescot and an away fixture against AFC Liverpool.

Despite being halfway up the table, AFC Liverpool's recent league form has been a tad chronic to say the least: no wins in their last six and only two league victories at Valerie Park all season. Add to that our paltry four league away goals and you have the recipe for a 0-0, right?

Perhaps not. What's worrying is that we have been placed into AFCL's lap like a sacrificial lamb at the right time yet again. Last season two bad league runs were broken with victories over us (1-0 at Park Road and 2-1 at 'Valerie). Can you hear the sound of hand-rubbing, anyone?

If we can break this recent bad habit of conceding first then we will have every chance of getting a result here which would set us up nicely for Barnoldswick this Saturday. By Christ, we need something. We can't go through this whole month without winning a game, surely?

I'm missing this one as it's the wife's birthday and I don't fancy seeing if hell actually hath no fury. As a result there will be no match report or pics from me, but you should be able to keep up with the latest scores at this Twitter feed or even this one.

Results Round-Up: Saturday 6th March 2010

The league table does not make good reading. Our very own Cheadle Town are second-from-bottom - with 18 points from 19 matches - following the weekend's 0-3 defeat at Eccleshall. Of course this isn't taking into account the three points we may get back thanks to the appeal but the league table is what it is. I'm honestly beginning to think that the top ten finish - and participation in next year's FA Cup - is beyond us this season. I hope I'm wrong.

There is, of course, the First Division Trophy to hang our collective hat on. The draw was made for the semi-finals over the weekend and we have been landed with a home tie against Stone Dominoes. No date has been set as yet. AFC Blackpool joined the semi-final line up by defeating Chadderton by a goal to nil on home soil. They will face the winners of the remaining quarter-final tie - Wigan Robin Park v AFC Liverpool - away from home in the other semi-final.

Speaking of Stone Dominoes, they now lead the First Division by goal difference alone from Barnoldswick Town following this weekend's league fixtures. Stone fell to a last-minute goal at in-form Atherton Collieries in a 0-1 defeat and Barnoldswick were held 2-2 at Ashton Town.

Six points and two games-in-hand behind are Leek CSOB; they also drew 2-2 when Oldham Borough were the visitors.

Elsewhere, AFC Liverpool's dicky home form continued with a 0-1 defeat to Wigan Robin Park; Daisy Hill slammed Irlam 3-0 at home and Holker Old Boys' recent good form came to an end following a 0-1 home defeat.

Eccleshall 3-0 Cheadle Town

Out of the two teams it was Eccleshall who broke their bad run-of-form as they eventually ran out comfortable-looking 3-0 winners at Pershall Park.

Talk about a game slowly crumbling from underneath Cheadle's feet. We started off brightly enough, stringing together some free-flowing passes and looking as though we would make a decent game of this but ended the match three goals and one player worse off following Andy Lindon's dismissal on the hour mark.

Despite our possession the first decent chance of the match fell to Eccleshall on 8 minutes as a close-range shot clipped the crossbar, followed ten minutes later by O'Keefe making a great stop following a one-on-one.

There was a flurry of three successive chances as the game entered the half-hour mark. First of all Eccleshall screwed a shot wide following a suspected foul on Neil Logan with Aaron Riley then going straight up the other end and having a one-on-one blocked by the 'keeper's legs...swiftly followed by a header flashing just wide of the post from a Sam Willans cross.

0-0 at half-time would have suited us but it sadly wasn't to be as Eccleshall took the lead moments before the referee put the whistle to his mouth. We didn't clear our lines effectively and the ball was threaded through to the right where their no.7, Lascana Sidibe, was on hand to side-foot past O'Keefe.

Eccleshall continued their hunt for goals at the start of the second half. Sidibe - that man again - had a curling effort headed off the line by Scott Clarke on 50 minutes with the hunt proving fruitful just two minutes later as they got their second; a corner from the right was easily nodded home at the far post.

With the game slipping away an already bad situation was made worse with Lindon's dismissal with the whole thing tin-lidded by Eccleshall's third on 67 minutes; Sidibe getting his second of the match after latching onto a left-wing cross with a first-time finish.

And that was pretty much that. Eccleshall could have made the scoreline worse for us but thankfully they were too indecisive and/or came up against some stoic defending from Neil Logan and Ben Roberts.

We haven't made the best of starts to 'March Madness', have we? And look at our next two matches: AFC Liverpool and Barnoldswick Town. Both away.

Saturday's Opponents: Eccleshall

Moving swiftly on, it's a trip down the M6 to the picturesque village of Eccleshall this Saturday. Despite our recent ropey record there it's an away-day I always look forward to; as long as I remember to take an umbrella as the weather has always been nothing short of rotten each time!

Both teams head into this match with a woeful run of league form: one draw and one win in the last six matches with Eccleshall being on the back of two straight defeats and owning the least number of clean sheets in the league this season.

Another similarity to us is that they are finding wins at home hard to come by: just the two all season at Pershall Park.

If the re-instatement of the three points is going to mean anything, we need a win. That would put us on 24 points and right back-in-business for a top ten finish.

Come on Cheadle!

Cheadle Town 1-3 Irlam

Irlam got their revenge for the First Division Trophy defeat by running out 3-1 winners on a Baltic night at Park Road.

Despite the defeat, there's one major positive from tonight: we have won our appeal to have our three points re-instated. What a shame we couldn't supplement it with another three!

This match opening quarter was played at a furious tempo with both teams notching a goal apiece in the first 15 minutes. It was Irlam who struck first after just 5 of those minutes; a corner from the left was headed in at the far post. Cheadle replied ten minutes later when Pat O'Brien went on a mazy run, his cross spinning up in the air for Arron Riley to nod home from a yard out at the far post.

If records serve me right that's Arron's 50th goal for Cheadle Town; we'll get that confirmed....

There could have been more goals soon after thanks to two glorious chances for each side in the space of 60 seconds: Irlam having a shot cleared off the line and Kerim Alan seeing his powerful header blocked at point-blank range by the 'keeper.

That was pretty much that as the half died a slow, painful death until the restart which Irlam began with real brio. Their work paid off on 55 minutes when their number 7 evaded a handful of our defenders on the edge of the box and drilled a delicious left-footed shot into the roof of the net. It should have been 3-1 two minutes later but their striker was wasteful from 6 yards out, allowing his shot to be hacked off the line.

Cheadle's best chances in the second period fell later on to Sams Hall and Willans (pictured above with his 'Player of the Month' Award) in that order, Hall blasting over from 6 yards out and Willans stroking wide after working himself into a good position on the left.

The match looked to be slipping away from us anyhow when Irlam wrapped it up good and proper 5 minutes into stoppage time; a jinking run by the touchline on the left saw the ball cut back and then swept home with ease.

One down, eight to go this month. Onwards - and hopefully upwards - to Eccleshall this Saturday....

Player of the Month(s): December/January/February 2009/2010

This has been a really difficult choice as I've had to cast one's mind back to the beginning of December and had to pick between four or five players that were in contention.

After much thought and a couple of bottles of Thatcher's cider the choice became that little bit easier to make.

This player has put in consistent shifts over the past couple of months and has recently topped it off by getting his first couple of goals for the club: the vital game-breaker in extra-time during the First Division Trophy tie at Irlam and the equaliser in the home defeat against Atherton Collieries.

So, the box o' beer goes to Sam Willans. He'll be presented with it before the home match against Irlam tonight.

Wednesday's Opponents: Irlam

Thanks to one of the worst footballing winters on record, a huge task awaits us in this month of March. The following nine matches in the space of four-and-a-half weeks will define our season; there's a lot to be won, a lot to be lost.

And it all starts this Wednesday when Irlam are the visitors. Currently in 5th spot with 29 points from 18 matches they'll be looking for the three points to maintain their touch with the leading pack. They'll also want some sort of revenge for the First Division Trophy quarter-final match at Silver Street a couple of weeks back where we ran out 3-2 winners after extra-time.

Over the 90 minutes of that match it could have gone either way, but that said it was plain to see that Irlam were still a decent side: they aren't 5th for nowt. What has let them down a bit has been their away form: won 3, drawn 3, lost 3; perhaps something that Cheadle can exploit.

So, here we go. Keep your eye on this website over the next month as the previews, match reports, round-ups and bits n' bats will be coming thick and fast.

Results Round-Up: Saturday 27th February 2010

Our very own Cheadle Town have moved back up the table by one place following the 1-1 draw at Ashton Town. We are now in 15th place with 18 points from 17 matches.

Surprising result of the weekend was at Motiva Park where Rochdale Town went to Stone Dominoes and came back from 0-2 down to claim a 2-2 draw. That keeps Stone top of the table but only by a single point now after Barnoldswick Town grabbed a late goal in a 1-0 win at Eccleshall. Leek CSOB and Holker Old Boys - 3rd and 4th respectively - couldn't capitalise on Stone's slip as they shared a 1-1 draw.

In the only other league result of the day, AFC Blackpool and AFC Liverpool also played out a 1-1 draw, keeping those teams in 7th and 6th places respectively on the same number of points.

Ashton Town 1-1 Cheadle Town

A late Kerim Alan goal - his first for the club - salvaged a draw for Cheadle Town in a game that ultimately had just about everything.

With just four minutes left on the clock Kerim was the quickest to react, smashing home from a tight angle after the Ashton 'keeper had palmed away a Ben Roberts free-kick. That goal came towards the tail end of a manic last 20 minutes...but more of that later.

Up until that point this game was panning out to be a classic "game of two halves"; Ashton Town claiming the first-half on points, Cheadle Town the second.

Ashton carved themselves enough chances to be out-of-sight by half-time. After just 8 minutes a free header was glanced wide, a close-range shot blasted over the bar on 13 minutes and another free header planted straight into O'Keefe's hands ten minutes later. They finally made their pressure tell just after the half-hour mark: after Cheadle surrendered possession in their own half and failed to clear their lines, a ball was poked through for an Ashton striker to just beat Keefo to the ball and stab home.

We were putting together some good approach play but not doing much with it, with an Arron Riley header flying just over the bar on 42 minutes being our only chance of worth of note.

Second half, different Cheadle. Now playing down the Edge Green Street slope we went right at Ashton from the off. Just five minutes into the restart we should have had a penalty and four minutes later Johnny Hussain and Arron Riley tested the 'keeper with consecutive, decent long-range efforts.

With 20 minutes to go, the match went completely bonkers.

Ashton almost delivered a sucker punch but had a goal-bound effort cleared off the line and O'Keefe excellently blocking the point-blank effort from the rebound. Then, straight down the other end, Kerim Alan was put clean through but somehow dragged his shot wide.

Paul McCormack tested the Ashton keeper with a long range effort a minute later and Kerim Alan squandered another great opportunity when put through a minute after that. Straight back up the other end, Ashton then wasted a clear chance to make it 2-0 and wrap the game up.

I haven't finished yet. Adam Roberts was then sent off for his second bookable offence, Kerim Alan put us level, Ashton had a goal disallowed, Ashton then had a man sent off, then Neil Logan got sent off, Andy Lindon put a free header just wide, then we had a goal disallowed then....oh then....Pat O'Brien had all the time in the world to definitely wrap it up but somehow put his shot over the bar from 6 yards out.

If you're thinking all that was missing was a dog on the pitch, well, we had one of those and all.

A point was the least we deserved today and really we should have won it based on the chances we created in the second half. However, I can't finish off without mentioning the fact that this was a decent match ruined by a poor referee; I'm sure any readers from Ashton Town will agree with me on that one.....
